Abrasive water jet cutting at County Fabrications |
Abrasive water jet cutting works by passing high pressure water at 3800 bar through a pneumatic valve, then through an industrial jewel, a sapphire, to reduce the jet to 0.4mm wide. A fine abrasive garnet sand is then added and forced through hardened carbide nozzle which determines the diameter of the cutting jet. The cutting jet can be varied from 0.5mm to 1.2mm dependent on cutting application. The final velocity of the abrasive liquid when it meets the surface to be cut is in the region of 1000 metres per second, which is 2-3 times the speed of sound. It is this tremendous speeding abrasive water that creates the cutting tool.
